Primordial Ooze / Prometheus Unbound

This piece was was my contribution to an exquisite corpse for a group show called ‘Sixteen Inches Up’. None of the artists saw each others’ work prior to hanging. The only unifying factor was that there needed to be some kind of visible horizontal division or horizon line 16″ up from the bottom.

I was thinking about how monastic ruins seem like manifestations of portals and it just went from there. Which side of the portal is real and which side isn’t? On which side do we reside? When we pass through, are we arriving or leaving?

Acrylic on canvas and braced plywood panel. 36″x 24″.
